The Economist predicts high level of unrest in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is on the list of countries where unrest is possible in the coming year. Experts estimate the predicted level as high. The Economist reports.

The article, titled «Costly food and energy are fostering global unrest», states that riots are possible due to the problems with food and energy security in the world, which are caused by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and military operation in Ukraine.

According to the author of the article, political and social discontent of citizens may arise in a number of countries in the near future.

Kyrgyzstan, where three presidents have already been overthrown since the country gained independence, is mentioned among other countries.

The expert notes the strong dependence of Kyrgyzstan on Russia, including the volume of remittances from migrant workers and food supply.

The author adds that unrest and regime change are not necessarily the result of popular discontent — states with independent institutions and the rule of law will survive political and social instability without overthrow of the regime.

The article is based on reports by the IMF, the World Bank, Gro Consulting, the International Energy Agency, The Atlas of Economic Complexity, ACLED and The Economist.
