Alikhan Smailov: There is a lot of talk about barriers in EAEU

«There are talks about barriers in the EAEU from time to time, but in reality their number does not reduce,» the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov said at a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council.

According to him, in the new reality, it is necessary to transform the activities of the Eurasian Economic Union. The region has enormous potential for business development. Its use is largely hampered by barriers.

«In some ways, we are hindered by the imperfection of the contractual framework, and in some ways by country protectionism. It is necessary to unite efforts in ensuring a free market. This is vital for the growth of the economy and improvement of the well-being of the citizens of the EAEU. The work of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) should be focused on ensuring the four freedoms guaranteed by the Treaty on the EAEU,» he said.

The head of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan also drew attention to the fact that interruptions in the supply of components, raw materials and finished products exposed the problem of an insufficient level of cooperation between industrial sectors. Real projects are needed in all industries. The EEC should start developing joint cooperation projects in this area.

«There is also a need to create new trade routes. We are ready to work together on alternative ways. But ensuring unhindered transit across the entire territory of the union, non-discriminatory access to the maritime port infrastructure must be implemented in practice. This is the most sensitive issue for Kazakhstani business, without which it is difficult to assess the benefits of the EAEU. I urge my colleagues to be flexible and constructive in providing accelerated and simplified transit, including using digital technologies,» he added.
