Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan launches glacier conservation project

The Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan is launching a glacier conservation project. Head of the ministry Askarbek Dzhanybekov announced in Bishkek at the presentation of «Save the Glaciers» movement.

«One of the priority tasks is the development of unproductive pastures. It is about 500,000 hectares of land. To develop is not just to grow grass or a tree on a practically lifeless land, it is a hard and labour-intensive process that in the future will save our land from the consequences of global climate change and, most importantly, save the precious glaciers of Kyrgyzstan, which feed not only our country, but the whole Central Asian region. Water is the oil of the 21st century and the source of life, and it is also the source of peace, stability and prosperity for Central Asia,» the official said.

The draft law on the development of unproductive pastures with an area of 500,000 hectares is now undergoing a second reading in the Parliament. It proposes to provide farmers with pastures for development and agricultural production.
