Potential of renewable energy sources in Kyrgyzstan is very high, but they account for only 1 percent of the total energy balance. Oksana Gudkova, a specialist in renewable energy sources, said at the meeting «Development of the Energy Sector in the Kyrgyz Republic through Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency».
According to her, about 15 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity are generated annually in Kyrgyzstan.
«At the same time, consumption is growing by 5-10 percent on average. Power industry specialists declare the need to increase generation,» Oksana Gudkova said.
She added that, according to experts, Kyrgyzstan can annually receive up to 50 million kilowatt-hours from wind energy, 500 million kilowatt-hours from the sun, 5-8 billion kilowatt-hours from water (small hydropower stations), and up to 1.3 billion kilowatt hours from biomass.
Her colleague Nurzat Abdyrasulova noted that the use of renewable energy sources does not bring benefits to enterprises. According to her, they have no incentive to introduce such technologies, since they currently do not receive support from the state.
