Kyrgyzstan presents plan for development of mountainous regions to UN

The Permanent Mission of Kyrgyzstan presented a draft concept of five-year action for the development of mountainous regions at the UN headquarters in New York. Press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

Nurlan Aitmurzaev, special envoy of the President of Kyrgyzstan for implementation of the project, made a presentation.

According to him, mountain areas are unique types of ecosystems, and the problems they face due to climate change are specific. A set of mountain initiatives aimed at solving problems of mountain countries in the field of economy and trade, science, education and culture, environmental protection, climate change and prevention of natural disasters, as well as international cooperation in these areas was voiced at the presentation of the five-year plan.

The Kyrgyz side proposed to create a broad coalition of mountain states to more effectively defend their interests within various UN structures. The initiatives will be combined into a single set of activities called «Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountainous Regions,» and they will be implemented over the period of 2023-2027.

Kyrgyzstan also asked UN countries to support and sponsor the resolution. The Permanent Mission reported that meetings on sustainable mountain development with the participation of President Sadyr Japarov would be held within the high-level week of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
