MP offers coal mining companies to give 40 percent stake to state

Parliament member Zhenishbek Toktorbaev proposes to amend law on subsoil.

The country’s coal industry is one of the fuel and energy complex’s most advanced industries, he believes. According to official figures, the republic mined about 3 million tons of coal in 2021.

At the same time, 99 percent of coal-mining companies are private, the only state-owned company among them, which is engaged in coal mining, is Kyrgyzkomur.

«But private companies only pay taxes to the state budget, which are only a small part of the income coming from coal extraction. However, minerals do not belong to certain individuals, but are the wealth of the country and the people,» Zhenishbek Toktorbaev said.

He believes that in order to ensure economic interests, it is necessary to make changes providing for mandatory state shareholding of not less than 40 percent in the company, which received a license for the right to use coal deposits.

The deputy added that with the state share participation the Kyrgyz Republic would act as a partner and guarantor of the subsoil user.
