Kyrgyzstan will continue to import electricity from neighboring countries in 2022 to save water in Toktogul reservoir. The Deputy Energy Minister Tilek Aitaliev said at a meeting of Ata Jurt Kyrgyzstan parliamentary faction.
According to him, the volume of water in Toktogul reservoir to date is 8.1 billion cubic meters. Last fall it was 12.3 billion.
«Difference compared to the same period last year was 2.9 billion cubic meters. We have reduced it to 0.4 billion cubic meters. This has become possible thanks to optimization of the energy sector’s operation mode. We have increased the capacity of the Bishkek Heating and Power Plant. Every year it used to work at capacity of up to 360 megawatts. This year it generated 450 megawatts of electricity. Prior to that, the Bishkek Heating and Power Plant produced 1.2-1.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This year it produced 2.1 billion kilowatt-hours. The main goal was to save water,» Tilek Aitaliev said.
He noted that this year, because of the energy crisis, electricity was imported from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
«If we had not taken such measures, the volume of Toktogul reservoir would have fallen and the hydropower plant would not have been able to continue electricity generation. This year we will continue to work on saving water. Agreements for import of electricity have already been concluded, including with Turkmenistan,» Tilek Aitaliev concluded.
