First female U.S. secretary of state Madeleine Albright passes away

Madeleine Albright, the first female secretary of state in U.S. history, has died from cancer aged 84. BBC reports.

The Czech immigrant became America’s top diplomat in 1997 during the Clinton government.

«We are heartbroken to announce that Dr. Madeleine K. Albright, the 64th U.S. Secretary of State and the first woman to hold that position, passed away earlier today. The cause was cancer,» the statement posted on her Twitter account says.

A Department of State spokesman told reporters that the impact she had on the department «is felt every single day.»
