Events in Kazakhstan: 3,500 security officers injured in conflict

Approximately 3,500 servicemen, security and law enforcement officers were injured during the January unrest in Kazakhstan. The Kazakh media report, citing the Prosecutor General Berik Asylov.

According to him, a total of 230 people were killed, 19 of them were servicemen, security and law enforcement officers.

Berik Asylov also told that police officers and soldiers, each 18-20 years old, were brutally beaten and tortured. About 3,500 people were injured among the security forces, or 80 percent of all injured in those days.

At least 766 people were detained: mostly people under 30, unemployed and without higher education.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2, 2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region protested against an increase in the price of liquefied gas, then the protests spread to other regions.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency in the republic, dismissed the government and became the head of the Security Council. CSTO countries sent peacekeeping units to Kazakhstan at his request.
