16 pregnant women die of COVID-19 in 2021 in Kyrgyzstan

Sixteen pregnant women died of COVID-19 and community-acquired pneumonia in 2021. Press center of the Ministry of Health reported.

According to its data, a total of 57 women died in childbirth and the postpartum period. The maternal mortality rate, including cases of COVID-19 and severe acute respiratory syndrome, reached 37.1 per 100,000 live births.

«There has been a 14.6 percent decrease in the rate over the same period in 2020. At that time, the rate was 43.5, or 67 female deaths,» the ministry stressed.

The Ministry of Health noted that extragenital diseases (extragenital pathology combines diseases, syndromes and conditions in women that are not related to gynaecological diseases or obstetric complications. — Note of 24.kg news agency) took the first place in the structure of maternal mortality causes last year. They caused 17 deaths, 16 of which — COVID-19, community-acquired pneumonia and post-COVID conditions.

At least 153,631 births were registered in Kyrgyzstan in 2021, which is 429 less than in 2020, but the infant mortality rate was 4.3 percent higher — 15.6 per 1,000 births and 15 per 1,000 births, respectively. The number of deaths of children under 12 months old increased by 90. Last year, 2,395 children died, while in 2020 — 2,305.

«Diseases and conditions that occur in the perinatal period (58.4 percent, or 1,398 children), congenital anomalies (17.3 percent, or 414 children), respiratory diseases (9.6 percent) take the first places in the structure of causes of infant mortality in the country,» the ministry added.
