Three snow leopards have died of complications from the coronavirus at the Lincoln Zoo in Nebraska. The Associated Press reports.
Two Sumatran tigers were also infected with COVID-19 at the zoo, but they managed to recover. They, like the deceased snow leopards, began to receive treatment last month.
The zoo remains open to the public. The park said it has strict coronavirus protocols in place for animal areas, including mask use for staffers working inside.
The snow leopard is included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and has the status of a rare or endangered species in all 12 countries where it lives: Russia, Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Bhutan.
