Kyrgyzstan to spend assets stolen by Bakievs for public good

Finance Minister of Kyrgyzstan Baktygul Jeenbaeva and the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of USA Alice Wells signed a statement on repatriation of Kyrgyz assets stolen during the former regime of Kurmanbek Bakiev.

The document states that the government of Kyrgyzstan undertakes to spend the returned $ 4.5 million for the benefit of the population.

In particular, the money will be spent on improving access of the rural population to the health care system. X-ray and diagnostic equipment will be installed at regional hospitals. In addition, water supply facilities will be built.

Part of the money will be spent on strengthening the institutions responsible for anti-corruption programs, on promoting trials’ transparency. Audio and video equipment for district courts will be purchased.
