Omurbek Tekebayev returns to penal colony after treatment

The leader of Ata Meken political party, Omurbek Tekebayev, will be transported to the penal colony 47 under guard today. His treatment has been completed. The State Penitentiary Service of Kyrgyzstan informed 24.kg news agency.

According to the agency, the doctors of the National Cardiology Center, where the politician was treated, came to the conclusion that he did not need medical supervision any more and could undergo medical procedures in the colony.

According to lawyers representing the interests of the ex-deputy, from March 20, 2019, Omurbek Tekebaev will be legally provided with an opportunity to change the regime of his detention.

«Probably, his prison term will change, since the new editions of the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code have come into effect,» the state service said.

Omurbek Tekebayev and Duishenkul Chotonov were sentenced to eight years in prison with confiscation of property. The courts of all instances found them guilty of corruption.

In November, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow arrested the former State Duma deputy, the main witness in Tekebayev-Chotonov case, a businessman Leonid Maevsky. He was accused of extorting $ 37.5 million for non-proliferation of defamatory information. Leonid Maevsky faces up to 15 years in prison.
