59 settlements have special status in Kyrgyzstan

59 settlements have a special «border» status in Kyrgyzstan. Mikhail Khalitov, Deputy Director of the State Agency for Local Self-Government and Interethnic Relations stated at the meeting of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial, Legal Issues and Regulations of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan.

Deputies are considering the issue of amending the law «On assigning special status to certain border areas of the Kyrgyz Republic and their development.»

According to Mikhail Khalitov, the existing law has only one criterion for settlements that can receive a special status of the border area: the threat to national security.

«When implementing the law on the special status of border areas, the government faced several problems, in particular, attraction of young doctors and teachers to work in border settlements, premiums for citizens living there," he said.

Deputy Iskhak Masaliyev noted that some villages that meet the above mentioned criteria were not included in the list of border settlements.

According to the deputy director of the state agency, as of today, 55 more settlements have applied for the granting of border status to them. If amendments are made to the law, each application will be considered by a commission.
