Bishkek is designed for 100,000 cars, and now there are more than 400,000. The Deputy Director of the Department of Transport and Development of Road and Transport Infrastructure of the Bishkek City Hall Almaz Alymbekov said at the Urban Forum.
He added that at least 50,000 more vehicles enter the capital from outside every day. City roads cannot handle such a number of cars.
The official also commented on the traffic jams. He believes that the reason is chaotic parking along the roadway and the lack of dedicated lanes for public transport.
The Department of Transport believes that eco-friendly buses (gas, electric), the development of an eco-taxi service, an increase in the number of bicycle paths, and dedicated lanes for public transport will help solve the problem.
Urban Forum 2024 is the largest international event, where representatives of city administrations, architects, researchers and activists meet.
The goal of the forum is to exchange experiences, discuss solutions for improving the urban environment and sustainable development of cities in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia.
More than 50 experts from Europe and Central Asia will share their knowledge. This event brings together public initiatives and government agencies to create cities of the future.
