Climate change, dialogue with EU: Sadyr Japarov makes speech in Astana

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov spoke at the Germany — Central Asia summit in Astana as part of his working visit to Kazakhstan. The presidential press service reported.

According to the head of state, Germany plays a significant role in the international arena.

«I am convinced that for our German colleagues, interaction with our region as a single economic space will allow to intensify investment, trade and economic cooperation. In this regard, I expect that our interaction format will be aimed at achieving specific results,» he noted.

Sadyr Japarov added that in the context of globalization, climate change issues require special joint attention, which pose a serious threat to Central Asia, where the average temperature is rising faster than in any other region on the Earth.

«The mountain ecosystems of the region, including Kyrgyzstan turned out to be the most vulnerable to climate change. For example, over the past 70 years, the area of the country’s glaciers has decreased by 16 percent, and by the end of the century we may lose more than 80 percent. As you know, Germany also pays great attention to climate change issues, as well as the efficient and careful use of water resources. In this regard, we propose to create a regional center for the introduction of energy-efficient and resource-saving technologies in Bishkek together with Germany,» he said.

Continuing the topic of water and energy resources, the President separately highlighted the construction of Kambarata HPP 1, which will become one of the largest regional projects.

«Active work is underway on attracting investors and technologies for the construction of this and other hydropower facilities in the republic. Of course, any entrepreneur, before starting to invest in a particular country, studies the economic aspects, legislation, security issues and guarantees of their investments,» he emphasized.

Speaking about the construction of China — Kyrgyzstan — Uzbekistan railway, the head of state called on German business to create logistics centers along the new railway route. He noted the interest of the Kyrgyz Republic in active cooperation with Germany, including within the framework of the European Union strategy for Central Asia, which has become an effective partnership mechanism.

«We also intend to maintain dialogue with the European Union, as evidenced by the signing of an agreement on enhanced partnership and cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the EU in Brussels this year. Literally next month, the third meeting of the Kyrgyz-German Business Council is planned in Munich, which is a specialized platform for dialogue between business structures,» Sadyr Japarov concluded.
