State flag change: Cabinet of Ministers supports initiative

The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan supported the initiative of deputies to change the state flag of the Kyrgyz Republic. The conclusion on the bill on amendments to the Law on State Symbols of the Kyrgyz Republic, signed by Akylbek Japarov, was sent to the Parliament.

Officials pointed out a discrepancy in the calculations between the text and the schematic representation of the country’s symbol and recommended correcting it. «The draft law provides for changing the shape of the rays on the state flag from wavy to a shape that clearly resembles the rays of the sun,» the Cabinet of Ministers commented.

The government proposes that official documents with the current flag image remain valid until they expire, including passports and driving licenses.

Officials also pointed to a lack of data on funding sources for the implementation of the bill.

The Speaker of the Parliament Nurlanbek Shakiev announced presence of some sponsors who are ready to finance the implementation of his initiative.

Earlier, Parliament passed the bill on changing the state flag in the first reading. 66 deputies voted for it, 8 — against.

The upcoming change of the state flag is being actively discussed in Kyrgyzstan. The initiative to change the flag was put forward by the Speaker of Parliament Nurlanbek Shakiev. According to the initiators, changing the sun’s rays is aimed at improving the flag. However, social media users do not agree with the proposal.

The head of state also spoke on this matter. According to Sadyr Japarov, in general he supports the idea. Chairman of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev also spoke in favor of the change. He stated: «The flag should not look like a sunflower, but should give the image of a shining sun.»
