President makes speech at 42nd session of UNESCO General Conference

The President of Kyrgyzstan made a speech at the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris (France). The press service of the head of state reported.

Sadyr Japarov noted that the event was taking place at a time when the world has been facing serious security threats, problems in establishing positive interaction and mutual assistance, interfaith and intercultural dialogue. Against the backdrop of these negative trends, the role of UNESCO once again becomes more relevant than ever.

The President also outlined several important topics:

  • Due to global climate change, mountain ecosystems and glaciers are particularly vulnerable. Kyrgyzstan also faces this problem and has been actively promoting the sustainable mountain development agenda within the UN for more than 20 years.
  • 2023-2027 became the five years of actions for the development of mountain regions in the republic. They will end in 2027 with the holding of the second global mountain summit Bishkek+25 in Kyrgyzstan, 25 years after the first summit.
  • It is necessary to make specific commitments to preserve mountain ecosystems; the head of state hopes for support for Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives at the UNESCO site and joint fruitful cooperation on the conservation of mountain ecosystems and glaciers.
  • Kyrgyzstan is committed to the full implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, which are directly integrated into the National Development Program until 2026.
  • The Kyrgyz Republic has joined the Global Environmental Education Partnership.
  • The country has created an effective system of state protection and popularization of cultural heritage.
  • Kyrgyzstan has put forward its candidacy for re-election to the executive council for 2023-2027 period.

In conclusion, Sadyr Japarov cited the commandment of the great Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov: «Take care of the earth and nature, because there will be no life on Earth. Preserve freedom and peace, because there will be no peace in our lives. Preserve love, morals and conscience, because a person will cease to be a person. Don’t forget the past, because there is no future without it.»
