The World Bank will no longer provide loans to Uganda due to the passage of a law against LGBT+ community. Statement of the bank says.
The document, as it is stressed, contradicts the values of the World Bank, in particular, inclusiveness and non-discrimination.
The statement also states that the goal of the international financial institution is to eradicate poverty on the planet. It can only be achieved if WB injections cover the entire population of a given country, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation.
Immediately after the adoption of this law in May 2023, the World Bank sent a group of specialists to Uganda. They found that the country needed additional measures to bring projects up to the bank’s environmental and social standards. Now they are being discussed with the government of Uganda. Until the country’s legislation is brought into line with the principles of the World Bank, no new loans will be provided.
