Electricity tariffs to increase in Kyrgyzstan from May 1, 2023

Electricity rate for the population will increase by 23 tyiyns in Kyrgyzstan and will reach 1 som from May 1, 2023. The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov signed the corresponding decree.

According to the decision, the rate for consumption of over 700 kilowatt-hours of electricity will remain at the same level — 2.16 soms per kilowatt-hour. The tariff for needy families and citizens will also remain at the same level and will be 50 tyiyns per 1 kilowatt-hour. The existing tariff for the population without capacity limitation (unlimited tariff) was reduced to 3.28 soms per kilowatt hour instead of 5.04 soms.

«The measure related to the tariffs increase is necessary to ensure energy security of the country, uninterrupted power supply to the population in conditions of dynamic growth of consumption. The changes made are a forced measure. It will provide an opportunity to replace worn-out power equipment left from the Soviet era,» the statement says.

Despite the reconstruction and modernization of the operating thermal and hydroelectric power plants, the depreciation of the power equipment is now over 80 percent. The funds received as a result of the tariff increase will be used to modernize the outdated equipment.

«This, in turn, will prevent possible failures at energy facilities and system outages,» the Cabinet believes.
