Rescue operation continues in the southern regions of Turkey and northern Syria after powerful earthquakes that occurred on Monday and Tuesday and claimed the lives of more than 7,200 people. BBC reported.
According to rescuers, the number of victims in Turkey by Tuesday evening increased to 5,434, more than 32,000 were injured. As a result of earthquakes, about 6,000 buildings collapsed, including apartment buildings.
In neighboring Syria, at least 1,712 people are known to have died. The White Helmets rescuers working in Syria expect these data to be far from final.
In total, according to the World Health Organization, about 23 million people live in the affected territories. The organization warned that the total death toll could exceed 20,000.
Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 hit southern Turkey on February 6 near Gaziantep city, where more than a million people live. Dozens of aftershocks were registered in Syria, Georgia and other countries.
The Turkish Embassy in Kyrgyzstan announced collection of humanitarian aid. A single deposit account has been opened in Kyrgyzstan to raise funds to help the victims.
