Mass arrests: Gulnara Dzhurabaeva remanded in custody

The Bishkek City Court considered a measure of restraint against politicians and activists in the case on attempted seizure of power by force (Kempir-Abad case).

During consideration of the measure of restraint against ex-member of the CEC Gulnara Dzhurabaeva, lawyers asked to take into account the age of the accused, as well as the fact that the investigators did not prove her guilt.

Gulnara Dzhurabaeva herself noted that the investigators charged her with the fact that she, along with others, had been preparing riots since spring. However, according to the ex-member of the Central Election Commission, she could not do this in any way, at least for family reasons.

«My husband died. I was busy with preparations for funeral. But the investigator does not even take this into account. After all, all conspiracies are organized secretly, and not publicly,» Gulnara Dzhurabaeva said.

Leaving the deliberation room, judges Almaz Karabekov, Zaurbek Dzhunusov and Nazgul Iliyazova issued a decision to remand Gulnara Dzhurabaeva in custody.

The Committee for protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir was created on October 22. It includes activists, politicians and MPs. On the same day, in an interview with Kabar news agency, President Sadyr Japarov said: the authorities have information who was behind the rallies and marches on Kempir-Abad issue.

Mass arrests began on October 23. Authorities placed 26 people in jail on charges of preparing for riots.

A number of international human rights organizations such as the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), Freedom Now and others issued a statement calling for the immediate release of politicians and activists arrested in Kyrgyzstan.
