Development of Green City action plan starts in Bishkek

Development of a Green City action plan to help the municipality formulate its sustainable development vision and strategic goals starts in Bishkek. It will be implemented within the framework of the EBRD program, which the municipality joined in 2019. The First Vice Mayor of the capital, Mirlan Baigonchokov, announced it at the ceremony of launching the project.

«The project is fully consistent with our objectives, the national strategies of Kyrgyzstan and the commitments made in terms of ecology and adaptation to climate change. Bishkek, being the capital of the republic, should take on the role of a flagship in this process. Therefore, the project that we are launching today is timely and important,» he said.

According to the vice mayor, the document will help develop an action plan and direct the investments needed to address priority environmental issues.

Development of the action plan is funded by the Government of Japan.

A group of international consultants in cooperation with the Bishkek City Hall and the EBRD will work on the development of the document.

The main thematic areas of the plan will be air, water and soil quality, climate change risks, transport infrastructure, construction standards, industry, energy and solid waste management.

To date, the EBRD has invested nearly €921 million in 212 projects in Kyrgyzstan.
