Invasion of Kyrgyzstan: CSTO considers use of force unacceptable

The Secretariat of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) commented on the situation at the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. The message was published on the Secretariat’s Telegram channel.

It is noted that the clashes that took place on September 14-16, 2022 on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border with the use of heavy weapons, as a result of which there are dead and wounded on both sides, as well as destruction of civilian infrastructure, are of serious concern.

«We express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the killed, we share their pain and loss. We welcome the ceasefire and the negotiations that have begun between the border services of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. We are confident that mutually acceptable ways will be found to resolve this complex border issue, reduce tensions and prevent escalation,» the message says.

We consider the use of force unacceptable.

It was also noted that the CSTO is closely monitoring the situation and hopes that the truce that has been established will be long-term. The conflict must be resolved exclusively at the negotiating table, it is no longer possible to allow the death of people.

Emergency situation has been introduced in Batken region. Shooting began at several sites of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the morning of September 16. Settlements in Leilek and Batken district came under fire. The Ministry of Health reported 103 victims, 24 people were killed. As a result of the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, residents of seven villages in Batken and Leilek districts, as well as Dzhekendi village in Chon-Alai district of Osh region, left their homes.

Presidents Sadyr Japarov and Emomali Rahmon agreed to ceasefire. But, according to the latest data from the Border Service of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan, the Tajik side violated the agreements again.
