Kyrgyzstan to mark National Cleanup Day

The President signed a decree on the National Cleanup Day and the action plan to create an effective infrastructure for the management of household waste for 2023-2025.

According to the press service of Sadyr Japarov, the environmental campaign World Cleanup Day is held every year on the third Saturday of September in many countries of the world, the purpose of which is to unite the efforts of the general public, the media, government and business structures to clean up territories from garbage and maintain sustainable cleanliness.

As part of this civil campaign, mass clean-ups and educational events are held, in which everyone can take part. The emphasis is on cleaning up natural areas (forests, meadows, banks of water bodies), and when collecting garbage, its sorting is organized where it is possible. In addition, the organizers of the campaign at the local level conduct educational campaigns, promote a modern waste management system, separate collection and recycling, an eco-friendly lifestyle, reduction of the personal and public ecological footprint and sustainable development.

According to the decree, a policy in the field of ensuring environmental protection, rational use of natural resources, as well as improving the sanitary and environmental situation is being consistently implemented in Kyrgyzstan.

The Presidential Administration recognizes the insufficient provision of services for the collection and removal of household waste in cities and rural areas, the unsatisfactory state of the infrastructure in the field of household waste management, including municipal solid waste, and the non-compliance of existing household waste landfills with sanitary and environmental standards and demand taking comprehensive measures in this area.

The National Cleanup Day will be marked every third Saturday of September and every third Saturday of April.

The Cabinet of Ministers, authorized representatives of the President in the regions, heads of local state administrations, mayors of cities, heads of rural administrations were instructed to organize, with the involvement of public organizations, environmental activists, volunteers and citizens, activities for collection of household waste in the territories of cities and rural settlements, including territories occupied and assigned to enterprises, organizations, institutions, regardless of the form of ownership, as well as streets and courtyards in individual development zones, in order to ensure proper sanitary condition and order.

The decree also says about the introduction of «polluter pays» principle, which shows the need to create an appropriate legal and economic framework that provides for the compensation of waste management costs by the waste producers themselves.
