Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan agree on some disputed border areas

A regular meeting of topographic working groups of government delegations of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan has begun in Batken region, which will last five days. The parties agreed on about 80 kilometers of the border. The Special Representative of the Cabinet of Ministers for border issues Nazirbek Borubaev reported.

According to him, since May 2021, after the events at the border, 82 kilometers have been agreed. Prior to this, about 520 kilometers of the common border had been agreed upon. Work continues.

Nazirbek Borubaev added that the length of the border between the countries reaches 972 kilometers, but when clarified, there may be difference, because come sections may become shorter or longer during exchange of land.

The Chairman of the State Committee for Land Management and Geodesy of Tajikistan, Orif Khojazoda, also told about coordination of the 80-kilometer section earlier. According to him, the authorities of the Republic of Tajikistan are interested in the soonest resolution of issues on the borders with Kyrgyzstan, noting that in order to solve all the problems related to the delimitation and demarcation of the border, work will be carried out continuously in the future.

The President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov met with the head of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon in Cholpon-Ata on July 21. In addition to other issues, the parties also discussed border issues. An agreement was reached to step up the activities of the intergovernmental commission for the comprehensive consideration of issues of bilateral cooperation and the intergovernmental commission for the delimitation and demarcation of the state border of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

One of the largest and bloodiest conflicts with the use of weapons broke out on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border on April 28, 2021. Clashes between border guards and the local population began due to the attempts of the Tajik side to install video surveillance cameras near Golovnoy water distribution point in the village of Kok-Tash, Batken region. The parties first threw stones at each other, and later used firearms. Massive shelling with mortars, machine guns began at the water distribution point from the side of Tajikistan.
