The International Development Association (IDA) will allocate $100 million to Kyrgyzstan to improve the water supply situation in Batken and Issyk-Kul regions. Press service of the Parliament reported.
The Committee on Agricultural Policy, Water Resources, Ecology and Regional Development approved the relevant agreement on financing of the project «Improving Climate-Resilient Water Management Services» in the first reading.
According to the document, half of $100 million allocated by the donor organization is provided in the form of a grant, the other half is a loan for a period of 38 years at 0.75 percent with a 6-year grace period (without interest).
The project is expected to be implemented in 2022-2028 in Kyzyl-Suu, Bokonbaevo and Kadzhi-Sai villages in Issyk-Kul region, as well as in 38 settlements of Batken region. The funds will be used to rehabilitate the existing water supply / sanitation networks and build new ones, as well as the construction of treatment systems. In addition, the project is expected to finance rehabilitation of three irrigation and drainage systems located in the basin of Karadarya-Syrdarya-Amudarya rivers (Osh, Batken regions and part of Jalal-Abad region). These networks, according to available information, will provide agricultural land with a total area of 28,000 hectares with water.
According to the National Statistical Committee, 94 percent of the country’s population has access to drinking water.
