At least 21 people, including 19 children and two adults, were shot and killed at an elementary school in Uvalde city, Texas, by a gunman who was later killed by law enforcement officers. CNN reports, citing a spokesman for the Public Security Administration of Texas.
State Senator Roland Gutierrez said that shortly before the tragedy at the school, the perpetrator allegedly shot at his grandmother. He said the woman survived and was hospitalized, her condition is not reported.
The Associated Press reports that the elementary school shooting has claimed the most lives compared to similar incidents since December 14, 2012. Then 20-year-old Adam Lanza entered the Sandy Hook School building in Newtown, Connecticut, and shot 20 children and six adults there, killing his mother before doing it.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooting at Uvalde school was opened by a local resident, 18-year-old Salvador Romas. The perpetrator acted alone, and police officers, who arrived at the scene, liquidated him. According to the governor, the suspect was armed with a pistol and, allegedly, had a rifle with him.
According to him, medical assistance is provided to 13 schoolchildren, two of them were transported to a hospital in the city of San Antonio. In addition, a 45-year-old adult received a gunshot wound.
According to local media, the incident began at about noon on Tuesday (11 p.m. Bishkek time) and police reported that the shooter was detained an hour later. There is no information yet about motives of the crime and condition of the victims.
