Attempted seizure of power: Bakyt Zhetigenov remanded in custody

The Bishkek City Court considered complaint of the lawyers of the parliamentary deputy Bakyt Zhetigenov regarding his measure of restraint.

During the hearing, the state prosecutor asked to keep the people’s deputy under arrest. Lawyer Rabiga Sadykova petitioned to overturn the decision of the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek and release the deputy from custody.

Leaving the deliberation room, the panel of judges upheld the ruling of the first instance.

Lawyer Rabiga Sadykova said that such a decision was unfair, since two other deputies, Asylbek Jeenbekov and Torobai Zulpukarov, had been released earlier.

«This is a selective approach. The accusation of an attempted violent seizure of power is nonsense. The investigation does not have any evidence. They are only going to schedule a phonoscopic examination, but it is not known when it will take place,» Rabiga Sadykova said.

Bakyt Zhetigenov is suspected of attempt to seize power. He was detained and placed in a pre-trial detention center. The investigation believes that he entered into an agreement with the leader of El Yntymagy association Askat Temraliev. Members of this movement and Bakytbek Zhetigenov were organizing mass protests in the capital, after which a violent seizure of power was to take place.
