Ex-president of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiyev comments on extradition to Bishkek

The second president of Kyrgyzstan, who was ousted on April 7, 2010 and fled to Minsk (Belarus), Kurmanbek Bakiyev, first commented on the initiative of the Prosecutor General’s Office to extradite him to Bishkek.

Earlier, the main supervisory body of the country reminded that courts have delivered verdicts in absentia for serious and especially serious crimes within the previously initiated criminal cases against Kurmanbek Bakiyev, his close relatives, including his son Maxim Bakiyev and his associates. All persons involved are sentenced to various terms of imprisonment, and work is currently underway to implement coercive measures to return the Bakiyevs to the country.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev, in response, suggested stop engaging in «populist rhetoric.»

Relatives of the former head of state sent his comment to 24.kg news agency.

«I would advise them (the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic. — Note of 24.kg news agency) to restore order within their justice system. I have already had occasion to meet with representatives of the Kyrgyz prosecutor’s office in a London court once. As you all know, the result was a court decision saying (I don’t remember letter for letter, but it’s easy to check) that the court has good reason to believe that the prosecutor’s bodies falsified the evidence in order to get a conviction in the Kyrgyz Republic, I’m talking about the case of Shawn Daily, which was considered by a court in the UK. By the way, neither I nor other family members were hiding, but simply came to court and participated in the trial, as it should be,» Kurmanbek Bakiyev said.

Starting from April 2010, I have been talking about conducting an independent investigation under the auspices of the UN or anyone else, but no one needed this and it is understandable why.

According to him, he and his relatives are again accused of stealing funds from the Development Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic.

«But, as it turned out, no one stole this money until April 7, 2010, at least. Once again, I ask you to recognize, for example, the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, The Hague Tribunal or the Council of Europe on Human Rights. I would be the first or one of the first to call them there. Moreover, if there is a legal mechanism to hold a trial in the Republic of Belarus — a real, open, live broadcast independent court hearing, where everyone will have equal rights, access to all legal means, there will be no pressure on witnesses, lawyers, then I would ask to participate in this process as a defendant in all their trumped-up cases. They can use my words as an official invitation to any of the courts,» the former president stressed.

If an independent court finds me guilty, I will go to jail myself, they will not need to make any efforts.

Head of the Development Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic, Aleksei Eliseev, was also accused of theft of money from the fund. However, he stated in March 2011 that, being the Director General of the Development Fund, he was able not only to save the funds of a Russian loan entrusted to this state organization, but also to earn more than $ 2.5 million for Kyrgyzstan, having transferred, in addition, credit interest to the Russian Federation.

Not a single state body of the Kyrgyz Republic has yet refuted this information by Aleksei Eliseev.

Recall, the courts convicted Kurmanbek Bakiyev and his relatives within the previously initiated by the Prosecutor General’s Office criminal cases on numerous facts of serious and especially serious crimes, including the events on April 7, 2010, murders, corruption and raider seizure of another’s property.

All the accused are currently wanted.

The Bakiyevs are friends with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, and also own a stake in the Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation, cottages near Minsk and land in the capital.
