Azimzhan Askarov transferred from detention center to prison for life-termers

Human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov was transferred from Bishkek detention center 1 to a prison for life-termers. His lawyer Nurbek Toktakunov confirmed the information to 24.kg news agency.

According to him, this means that the execution of the punishment began, sentence entered into force, because it was not appealed.

Azimzhan Askarov does not intend to appeal the conviction, as he does not believe in justice in Kyrgyzstan. Human rights activists point to the illegality of the authorities’ actions against Azimzhan Askarov and note that he is innocent. Previously, the UN Committee for the Protection of Human Rights, having considered the case, recommended to release the prisoner and provide him with an access to fair justice. However, the Kyrgyz Republic did not follow this recommendation.

The case of Azimzhan Askarov will also not be reviewed under the new Criminal and Criminal Procedure Codes.

Azimzhan Askarov was sentenced to life imprisonment. He is accused of inciting ethnic hatred and murder of a policeman during the June events in the south of the country in 2010.
