Children in Kyrgyzstan engaged in picking of cotton from age of 4

Children are engaged in picking of cotton from the age of 4-7 in Kyrgyzstan. Consultant of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Iness Benchiku told.

According to her, children from 5 to 17 years old are mainly involved in child labor in the republic. At the same time, experts are concerned that the proportion of children involved in hazardous types of work is growing. Thus, experts studied the involvement of children in the production of tobacco, rice, potatoes, walnuts, beans and cotton.

«As for cotton, children mainly work in its growing and harvesting. But if an adult person can pick about 82 kilograms of cotton per day, then a child — 20-25 kilograms. When children have been engaged in cotton picking from the age of four, this affects their health,» Inness Benchiku said.
