96 percent of children in Kyrgyzstan exploited by farmers

Child labor is used in agriculture in 96 percent of cases in Kyrgyzstan. This was announced today at a working meeting on discussion of a national action plan to eliminate the worst forms of child labor in the country.

According to experts, 39 percent of the total number of children work. At least 96.2 percent are employed in the agricultural sector, 3.8 percent — in other industries.

It is noted that children are involved in cotton harvesting in the southern regions. The duration of their working day is 10-12 hours.

Experts stress that the Kyrgyz Republic has ratified many conventions on child labor, discrimination against women and has undertaken certain obligations to respect the rights of children and women. Unfortunately, violations of their rights are not rare.
