Two policemen convicted for torture in 2017

Two police officers were convicted for torture in 2017. The Chief of the General Staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Zholdoshbek Khamzanov, stated at the round table discussion «Dialogue between the State and Civil Society for Torture Prevention.»

According to him, in 2017, the Ministry of Internal Affairs initiated and sent to the prosecutor’s office three criminal cases on torture. «Six police officers were suspected of torture within the cases. Two of them were convicted under the article «Abuse of office» of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic,» Zholdoshbek Khamzanov told.

He noted that the ministry was working to prevent torture, in particular, hotlines were opened at each police department.

«Every citizen can call the hotline and report about the illegal actions of police officers. Video cameras are installed in detention centers. There are 271 cameras, six of them work online,» said Zholdoshbek Khamzanov.
