Kubanychbek Kulmatov interrogated within Russian citizenship case

The ex-mayor of the capital Kubanychbek Kulmatov was interrogated in the framework of the criminal case on illegally obtained citizenship of Kyrgyzstan. His lawyer Sergei Slesarev told journalists.

According to him, Kubanychbek Kulmatov had not been formally charged so far and was questioned as a suspect.

«At first, he was told that he had Russian citizenship, but when it was not confirmed, they accused him of illegally obtained Kyrgyz citizenship. It turns out that his Kyrgyz citizenship is challenged by the bodies of the State Committee for National Security,» said Sergei Slesarev.

The lawyer noted that there was a court decision, according to which Kubanychbek Kulmatov does not have Russian citizenship.

«The case was opened on the grounds that he, being a Russian citizen, also obtained the Kyrgyz citizenship in the 1990s. But the criminal case should not have been initiated, because the period of limitations had expired. According to the law, the periods of limitation on the articles, which Kulmatov is charged with, are from one to three years. Almost 20 years have passed, and the case was opened despite the law,» Sergei Slesarev added.
