Paris first in Europe to ban rental electric scooters in city

Residents of Paris voted at a referendum for banning rental electric scooters. RTBF TV channel reports.

The referendum was organized by the mayor of the France’s capital because of the increasing number of accidents involving this type of transport and scooters piling up on sidewalks. Only 8 percent of registered voters took part in the vote.

Almost 90 percent of the participants voted for banning the rental electric scooters. Meanwhile, rental companies actively urged their customers not to miss the opportunity to support them at the referendum and even allowed free scooter use on Sunday. But only 91,300 out of 1.38 million Parisians eligible to vote took part in the plebiscite, less than 8 percent.

The City Council said it will not renew the licenses of the city’s three electric scooter operators — Lime, Tier and Dott.

It is still allowed to use personal electric scooters in Paris.
