Food security 90 percent dependent on irrigated land

At least 90 percent of food security is based on the products produced on 1 million hectares of irrigated land in Kyrgyzstan. Deputy Minister of Agriculture Murat Ramatov announced at the Bishkek Water Forum.

He noted that the irrigation system of the republic was built in 1950-80. About 40 percent of the irrigation canals are worn out and require modernization. In addition to the restoration of canals, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to fully automate water accounting using special systems, which will eliminate the human factor, as well as to develop drip irrigation.

«It is necessary to build at least two large plants for the production of drip irrigation systems. At least 718 drip irrigation systems were built on an area of 6,500 hectares in 2023,» the Deputy Minister added.

The Water Forum was organized by the Cabinet of Ministers and the World Bank to stimulate joint actions and transform the water sector in Kyrgyzstan.
