In an interview with Kabar news agency, the President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov commented on the possible arrival of fugitive president Kurmanbek Bakiyev in Kyrgyzstan.
«If the Bakiyevs come to Kyrgyzstan, will they be arrested?» the journalist asked.
«Kurmanbek Bakiyev, unlike Askar Akayev, has criminal cases. There is a court decision, and it is in force. He was sentenced to 30 years. If he arrives, he will be taken into custody. We must all learn to live by the law. I have no right to annul the court verdict. But if Kurmanbek Bakiyev turns to me with a petition for pardon, then I have the right to grant it or deny. I will make a decision taking into account the opinion of the people,» Sadyr Japarov said.
The fugitive president Kurmanbek Bakiyev was sentenced by the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan to 24 years in prison.
