Earthquake in Turkey: Death toll rises, seven days of national mourning declared

The death toll in Turkey as a result of the earthquake has risen to 1,762 people, 12,68 people were injured. The Emergency Situations Department reported.

At least 968 people became victims of the natural disaster in Syria, more than 1,200 people were injured, Al Arabiya reports citing the country’s Ministry of Health.

«We have received data on the destruction of 5,606 buildings,» Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that 2,470 people had been saved. Ankara has already received offers of assistance from more than 45 countries, including Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and EU countries.

Turkey has declared national mourning until February 12 inclusive.

The earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit southern Turkey on February 6 at night near Gaziantep, where more than a million people live. Tremors and aftershocks were also registered on the border with Syria.
