Mass arrests: Rita Karasartova remanded in custody

The Bishkek City Court considered a measure of restraint against an activist Rita Karasartova.

The lawyer said that she did not intend to hide from the investigation, she had a minor son dependent on her. The defender asked to place the detainee under house arrest.

Rita Karasartova herself asked her relatives not to worry about her. According to her, there is nothing illegal in the actions of the members of the Committee for protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir.

«We were guided only by our constitutional right. This is a historic case. Everything will fall into place in the near future. This criminal case was initiated illegally. We hope that Kyrgyzstan will become a legal and truly democratic state,» said Rita Karasartova.

As a result, the court remanded Rita Karasartova in custody.

The convoy did not allow the activist to talk to her relatives.

The Committee for protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir was created on October 22. It includes activists, politicians and MPs. On the same day, in an interview with Kabar news agency, President Sadyr Japarov said: the authorities have information who was behind the rallies and marches on Kempir-Abad issue.

Mass arrests began on October 23. Authorities placed 26 people in jail on charges of preparing for riots.

A number of international human rights organizations such as the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), Freedom Now and others issued a statement calling for the immediate release of politicians and activists arrested in Kyrgyzstan.
