Bridge collapse in India: Death toll continues to rise

Death toll in the collapse of a footbridge over Machhu River in the state of Gujarat has reached 132, two more are missing, search operation at the collapse site is close to completion. Times of India reports, citing the Minister of Interior of the state Harsh Sanghavi.

NDTV reported about 141 dead and 177 rescued. According to the minister, a criminal case has been opened on the fact.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and promised that the incident would be investigated by a government commission. The families of the dead and injured will receive compensation.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening in the city of Morbi. Built at the end of the 19th century, the pedestrian bridge collapsed at the height of the Diwali holiday a few days after a six-month repair. At the time of the collapse, there were about 400 people on the bridge, including many children, eyewitnesses said. According to the preliminary version, the collapse was caused by overload.
