Border conflict: Schoolgirl dies from shrapnel wound in Leilek

A 15-year-old resident of Dostuk village, Elzada Malik kyzy, died of a shrapnel wound. Local residents confirmed the information to 24.kg news agency.

According to them, Elzada, together with her family, was running away from the shelling by the Tajik military.

«She was wounded by a shell fragment. She died from the wounds. Her body was brought to Margun village,» local residents said.

According to local residents, several residents of Zhany-Zher and Kulunda rural areas were injured as a result of the shelling.

«There are many children among the victims. They are in shock. It became known that the shell hit the minibus, which evacuated people. The injured are being taken to the place of evacuation,» local residents told.

Shooting began at several sites of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the morning of September 16. According to the Border Service of the State Committee for National Security, at about 6 a.m. the Tajik side started firing at the border detachments and positions of the Kyrgyz side. Later, the Tajik side began mortar shelling of border outposts and border villages in Leilek and Batken districts. At least 42 people were wounded. Shooting continues for the third day. As a result of the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, residents of seven villages in Batken and Leilek districts left their homes.
