Almazbek Atambayev is denied treatment in Moscow

The State Penitentiary Service denied the former president of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev a trip to Moscow for treatment. His lawyer Zamir Zhooshev announced.

According to him, the response of the State Penitentiary Service says that Almazbek Atambayev is now receiving treatment in the prison colony.

Atambayev, according to the lawyer, is given intravenous drips so that he can move around the cell.

«These drugs cannot cure Almazbek Atambayev, they are used only to prevent his bad condition from developing into a critical one. But no one guarantees this either. Statement in the response of the State Penitentiary Service that Atambayev himself refused treatment at the National Center for Cardiology and Therapy is ridiculous. Almazbek Atambayev was recently treated there, but for objective reasons, this medical institution cannot eliminate the cause of pain in the back and esophagus,» Zamir Zhooshev explained.

Almazbek Atambaev is in the prison colony No. 27. He is serving a sentence in the case on the illegal release of a crime lord Aziz Batukaev. In June 2020, the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek sentenced Atambayev to 11 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The Bishkek City Court upheld this decision. The Supreme Court overturned the verdicts of the previous instances, sending the case back for a new trial.

Several criminal cases have been initiated against Almazbek Atambayev, including on riots in Koi-Tash village on August 7-8, 2019, corruption and money laundering. Last summer, he was charged with illegal issuance of passports to Turkish citizens, as well as organizing mass riots in October 2020. The former head of state was acquitted by the court of two last charges.
