Kyrgyzstan to provide Kazakhstan with 330 million cubic meters of water

Kazakhstan will receive 330 million cubic meters of water from Kyrgyzstan through the transboundary Chu and Talas rivers. Serikkali Brekeshev, Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, announced at a press conference.

According to him, the water from the Kyrgyz Republic will be used by farmers for irrigation.

The minister explained that water is supplied to Kazakhstan in accordance with an agreement on exchange, according to which the Toktogul HPP of Kyrgyzstan discharges water in the summer to return it in form of electricity in winter.

He also said that the Republic of Kazakhstan is working to increase the flow of water from neighboring countries. To do this, the republic reached an agreement with Tajikistan on 84 million cubic meters of water from Bahri Tojik reservoir in exchange for humanitarian assistance.

The agreement on the mutual supply of electricity between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan was signed in March 2021.
