Joe Biden announced that G7 countries would ban the import of Russian gold. The U.S. president wrote about it on Twitter.
He voiced the opinion of the G7 leaders, explaining this decision by the fact that Russia receives tens of billions of dollars by exporting the precious metal.
The decision was not expected to be announced before the end of the summit. Joe Biden did not say when the ban would take effect. The measure is expected to further «isolate Russia from the global economy.»
The summit of the United States, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan is taking place from June 26 to June 28 in Germany. Sweden, Finland and Ukraine have also been invited for the first time.
The British government, in turn, earlier reported that the ban will take effect soon and will apply to newly mined or refined gold. It will not affect gold that has been already exported from Russia.
