Uranium legacy museum opened in Mailuu-Suu

Museum of uranium legacy was opened in Mailuu-Suu. The Delegation of the European Union to Kyrgyzstan reported.

According to it, the museum was established in close collaboration with OSCE, UNDP, Mailuu-Suu City Hall, the Ministry of Emergency Situations and other partners, as part of the European Union project «Stakeholder Engagement for Uranium Legacy Remediation in Central Asia». The museum was opened under the Mailuu-Suu Development Forum, which promoted investment potential and stimulated socio-economic and environmental development of the town.

The mission recalled that during the Soviet years, Mailuu-Suu was a regional centre for mining uranium ore, but the large industry collapsed with the breakup of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.

«The new museum highlights the history and tradition of the industrial town and the effects of the mining and uranium tailing pits on the health of the local population and ecosystems. The museum provides a shared and interactive experience: everyone can share relevant historical materials, stories and memories in the recording booth. Anyone is also welcome to participate in open discussions on various topics, such as radiation safety and reclamation of uranium tailings. The museum is expected to develop the cultural tourism of the town,» the EU Delegation reports.
