Afghanistan earthquake death toll reaches 1,000

An earthquake in southeastern Afghanistan killed at least 1,000 people and injured more than 1,500. New York Times reports, citing theNational Disaster Management Authority of the country.

The 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred about 45 kilometers southwest of Khost city in the southeast of the country. Rais Hozaifa, director of information and culture for the eastern province of Paktika, said the quake was felt in several provinces. The search and rescue operation at the emergency site continues.

«The earthquake killed at least 40 people and injured 100 in Spera district of Khost province, northeast of Paktika province,» Shabir Ahmad Osmani, director of information and culture of Khost province, said by phone.

According to a map posted by the European Mediterranean Seismological Center on its website, the quake was felt in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and in the northern part of neighboring Pakistan.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, there are no citizens of Kyrgyzstan among the victims.
