Petition for renaming Yeltsin and Putin peaks created in Kyrgyzstan

A petition for renaming Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin peaks, located in Kyrgyzstan, appeared on the website Change.org.

Its authors remind that in 2002, under the first President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev, the peak Oguz-Bashi Tsentralny, located on Terskei Ala-Too mountain range in Issyk-Kul region, was renamed into Yeltsin peak. In 2011, at the beginning of Almazbek Atambayev’s presidency, an unnamed mountain on the Kyrgyz mountain range was named after Putin.

«Dear Sadyr Japarov and deputies of the Parliament! We, the people who signed this petition, believe that naming the peaks after Russian presidents is unreasonable and the opinion of the people was not taken into account. We demand to rename Yeltsin Peak into Ortonku Oguz-Bashi and to rename Putin peak into 1916-Urkun (1916 — The Great Exodus) to pay tribute to the victims of the 1916 uprising,» the petition’s authors say.

A video was posted on Twitter, which shows the flag of Ukraine on the peak named after the Russian President Vladimir Putin in Chui region. Authors of the video were summoned to the police for questioning.
