Kyrgyzstan to be assisted in return of funds illegally withdrawn from country

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime in partnership with the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Financial Intelligence Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched a project «Support of the Kyrgyz Republic in detection, confiscation and return of illegally acquired assets derived from corrupt practices.»

It is noted that a key element in the fight against corruption is the return of illegally derived criminal assets.

«President Sadyr Japarov shows initiative in the fight against corruption, and the United States stands ready to support these efforts,» Deputy Chief of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to the Kyrgyz Republic Kristian Moore said.

The project aims to improve interagency cooperation between law enforcement agencies and services in information analysis, analytical and investigative capabilities of parallel financial investigations and prosecution, and international partnerships with foreign partners. It is based on a joint roadmap for the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Financial Intelligence Unit and the Interior Ministry and includes:

  • Initial due diligence assessment;
  • Improvement of the legal framework;
  • Strengthening analytical, investigative, prosecutorial, technical and human resources capacity;
  • Development of the asset recovery component in the register of criminal cases related to corruption;
  • Strengthening inter-agency and international cooperation.

The project is financially supported by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. government. Total budget is $600,000. The duration is 18 months.
