Scientists identify more dangerous HIV strain

More infectious and dangerous strain of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) than all previously known variants is spreading in the Netherlands. UN News reports, citing UNAIDS.

It is noted that, according to a study by the Oxford University experts, the viral load of people infected with this strain is twice as high as in other patients, and AIDS develops two to three times faster. The dangerous strain, called B, has been spreading in the Netherlands for several years and, fortunately, is amenable to existing treatment methods.

Due to the new information, the UN reminds that the HIV pandemic in the world continues and every minute someone dies from the infection. Scientists have always been concerned about the possibility of new, more infectious and more dangerous variants of the human immunodeficiency virus. The strain identified in the Netherlands, according to experts, poses no particular threat to public health. Nevertheless, its identification is a reminder of the need to stop the HIV pandemic in order to prevent the emergence of new mutations.
